1949 Talbot Lago T26 Record CabrioletIt may be in its retirement year but a rare, ultra-elegant, meticulously-restored 1949 Talbot Lago T26 Record Cabriolet is one classic set to be the centre of attention at the forthcoming major auction of Historics at Brooklands on Saturday 8th March in Surrey.

Consummate grace and pace combine in this magnificently presented 65 year-old two-door Cabriolet, whose restoration can only be described as immaculate. A power output of 170bhp from its under-stressed and long-legged engine, mated to a proven chassis and running gear, made an immensely desirable driving package when introduced in 1947, although the majority of models were offered as a four-door Sedan, making this two-door soft-top all the more enticing for its rarity value.

1949 Talbot Lago T26 Record Cabriolet interiorOriginally supplied to a customer in the USA, the car is believed to have been taken off the road in the late 60’s or early 70’s, and was abandoned in a garage in the fall out of a marital break-up. Since then this fabulous classic car has undergone a painstaking restoration by its current owner.

Starting with a bare chassis strip and rebuild, every original component was re-commissioned where necessary and re-assembled. The engine and pre-selector gearbox too were stripped and fastidiously re-assembled, the same attention to detail being paid on all ancillaries including the exquisite instrumentation.

The bodywork was totally dismantled, the steel panels being repaired where necessary and the body re-skinned using the original paneling, the timber frame beneath having being replaced using the original as a pattern.

Finally, the interior has been entirely recreated to original specification using finest quality leather hides by former Rolls-Royce specialists to ensure it matches the same impeccable standards as the remainder of the car.

Having covered minimal mileage since restoration, this Talbot Lago is presented with a host of documents and photographs that chart its superb restoration journey to this Historics sale. This extremely significant example of French automotive penmanship is registered in the UK, taxed and carries a current MoT test certificate.
