JD Classics Kicks off Season with Podium Success at Goodwood

JD Classics SD1 at Goodwood Members Meeting

In the first race of the 74th Goodwood Members’ Meeting weekend – the Gerry Marshall Trophy – the JD Classics’ Patrick Motorsport Rover SD1 started third on the grid following a strong qualifying session. JD Classics’ own racing driver, Chris Ward, took the wheel first, lining up alongside the Chevrolet Camaros of David Clark and Grahame Bryant.

As the race kicked off, Chris Ward began chasing down the Camaros, and by lap three he was in first place, recording the fastest lap of the race on the very next lap. From there, the JD Classics Patrick Motorsport Rover SD1 extended its lead, eventually finishing almost 10 seconds clear of second place; the Ford Capri of John Young.

The grid for the second race of the Gerry Marshall Trophy is dictated by the results of the first, so Chris Ward sat on pole position in the SD1. Ward began immediately pulling away, with a lead of more than 10 seconds by lap six. Unfortunately, oil on the track was causing cars to spin so the safety car was called out, cutting Ward’s lead to just under a second.

With a late pit stop and driver change, Gordon Shedden came out of the pitlane in the Rover SD1 around 17 seconds ahead of the Camaro Z28 of Oliver Bryant. The powerful Camaro had caught up to the JD Classics Rover by lap 24, despite a good defensive drive from Shedden, and went to take the win just ahead of the JD Classics car.

In the Alan Mann Trophy – contested by Ford GT40s – JD Classics supported John Young’s entry, with Young and Chris Ward sharing the driving. Having qualified in 13th position, the GT40 climbed the grid to seventh by lap 10 but was forced to retire on lap 22 with a gearbox issue.

JD Classics Managing Director, Derek Hood, said: “The 74th Goodwood Members’ Meeting provided yet another weekend of unforgettable racing, capped off by an excellent win and a second place in the two parts of the Gerry Marshall Trophy. Our Patrick Motorsport Rover SD1 is consistently quick, challenging the hugely powerful Chevrolet Camaros every step of the way.”
