DIY Starsky and Hutch

Starsky and Hutch 1975 Ford Gran TorinoThere are only a handful of cars that have gained “screen legend” status - usually after some clever stunt work and a snazzy paint job. One of those cars is the 1975 Ford Gran Torino from the hit TV show Starsky and Hutch.

Iconic screen cars can be big business. Just look at the white Volvo P1800 driven by Roger Moore in The Saint. It was planned that Simon Templar would gad about in a Jag E-type, but Jaguar felt they already had too much demand! In steps Volvo (very happily) and gave the brand it’s highest ever desirability point.

There is off course a problem with these hugely popular automotive icons: the hike in price. The DB5 almost certainly holds a higher price because of Mr Bond and so do both the second and third generation Pontiac Firebird Trans Ams, because of Smokey and the Bandit and Knight Rider.

However, not being able to get your hands on the real deal doesn’t stop people driving around in their own A-Team Van, General Lee or Herbie. With iconic paint jobs you can just buy a tin of paint and voilà – you’re now driving an icon (sort of). This can make the rest of us very happy seeing the absolute disaster of their Ford Escort trying to be the Starsky and Hutch Gran Torino.

With the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show coming up next month, it got us thinking… Lancaster Insurance will have the very same Ford Gran Torino featured in the Starsky and Hutch show at their ‘Gran Torino Experience’ stand. So, with such interest in this classic we thought we’d trawl through the interweb to see what fabulous Starsky and Hutch creations people are “enjoying”.

All images were found online and go to show what a bit of paint and enthusiasm can create! Can you identify all the cars?
