Castle Combe Delivers Outstanding Autumn Classic

Castle Combe Autumn Classic 2013Aston Martin at Castle CombeCastle Combe race circuit added the Autumn Classic event to its calendar in 2012, providing spectators with a chance to see racing legends battle it out on track and get amongst them in the paddock.

2013 was no different, delivering a packed day of racing, exhibits and an outstanding opportunity to get up close and personal with both the classic cars and drivers.

Historic Aston Matins took to the track as part of their own specialist race, with the opportunity to see rare early DB Astons in celebration of the brand’s centenary.

Norman Dewis with Jaguar XJ13Jaguar was on force with a host of racing Jags and an outstanding replica of the one-off racing prototype, the Jaguar XJ13.

Jaguars led by XJ13Originally conceived to run shoulder-to-shoulder with giants at LeMans, the project never got off the ground, becoming no more than a test bed for Jaguar’s new V12 engine.

The original XJ13, although now restored, was put into storage for a number of years, before being brought back out in 1971 for a publicity run at MIRA. Jaguar’s test driver Normal Dewis took the helm, but due to a tyre failure the XJ13 crashed at speed, completely writing off the car, luckily with Norman remaining unharmed.

Ecurie Ecosse transporterDespite Norman’s history with the car, he was only too keen to be at the wheel again, leading a procession of Jaguars around the track, ranging from early XK120s through to the Latest XKR-S.

Amongst the paddock, which was open to all who attended, the Ecurie Ecosse transporter and cars drew in the crows, as a historic marque in British racing history. Not only was its history a draw, but the fact the collection will be auctioned off later this year, may also mean this could be its last public viewing.

Maserati 250 FClassic Jaguars racingOne of the biggest treats for the day was the famous Maserati 250 F, a car in which the legendary five-times world champion, Juan Manuel Fangio, claimed title success with in 1957. The striking red historic racer, previously voted one of the greatest racing cars ever, was a true delight to see in the flesh and out on track.

The rest of the afternoon on track saw a series of races bring classics back to life, with the “Normal Dewis Trophy” run by the Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club, the Healey Driver International Big Healey Challenge and the VSCC Pre War Sports Cars race.

Norman Dewis TrophyVintage racingThe day was finished with the FISCAR “50’s Inter-marque”, the Historic Formula Junior Championship and finally the “Fliers” Fifties Lightweight Sports Racing Cars.

Castle Combe makes a perfect setting for such an event, with its layout and spectator positioning taking you back to the earlier days of racing. No modern seating or massive gravel traps are between you and the track. You get up close and feel part of the racing.

It’s an absolute must for any classic or racing fan.
