Bentley Continental Traces its Classic DNA

Bentley Continental

We’re not really the ones for promoting modern cars, even when Bentley start sending out PR to promote their impressive Bentley Continental GT. However, when they start making the effort to link back to its classic origins, we take notice.

Bentley Continental

The Continental name first entered the company’s vocabulary in 1952 with the R-Type Continental; to some, the world’s first Grand Tourer.

With a top speed of 120 mph it was the fastest four-seater in the world at the time of its launch. Many of the 208 examples produced were coachbuilt by Mulliner – a name that is still closely associated with Bentley to this day.

As Bentley themselves say, just three strokes of the designer’s pen, the shape of the Continental comes to life: a clear power line, signature rear haunches and swooping, fast roof line.

Look closely at today’s modern grandchild of the original and you’ll see that even today Bentley keep those classic style elements.

Bentley also go on about the modern beast being bloody quick. However, even all the speed, tech and reliability of today’s Bentley struggles to stand up against the pure, effortless class of the original classic – in our eyes at least.
